Opening Act

Hi Everyone,

...This Issue of The Blues Report E-Zine is dedicated to the memory of Sean Costello. Sean Costello was a New Addition to the Network, just last month, and will be sadly missed by all whom were touched by his amazing talent.

Delta Groove Press Release: Sean Costello 1979 - 2008

...In early April, while I was enjoying listening to an excellent local band called the Infectuals, at the Westsyder Pub, I was asked by a friend I had not seen in a while, whether or not I ever went to the Blue Grotto. I told her yes, but not in quite a while. I told her that ever since the Blues Underground Network Kamloops Chapter (AKA Blues Underground Network Society), also referred to simply as the BUN, stopped putting on the Shows, the atmosphere there had changed to much and was no longer an enjoyable experience for me, especially on the weekends. She told me she had not heard of the Blues Underground Network and I told her, "Well the Blues Underground Network Kamloops Chapter (AKA Blues Underground Network Society) is the only reason that the Blue Grotto exists in the first place." In fact, one could easily argue that the BUN was the catalyst for rejuvenating the Live Music Scene in Kamloops.

When I started putting out my Newsletter, the majority of you were previous Members of the BUN, but that is going on into it's third year now and many of you whom have subscribed to the Newsletter since then, were more then likely, unaware of the short yet amazing era of the BUN.

That being said, starting with the June issue , I will be offering a history of the BUN from it's start at the old Elks Lodge #44 to it's finish, not long after it's untimely departure from illegal pete's, which is now called the Blue Grotto. Through collected photo's and my own perspective, I will take you on a journey from the BUN's humble beginnings to it's premature end.

...This Email just in from Kath Raeber concerning a exciting new Musical Event, the Rare Earth Jazz & Blues Festival http://www.rarearthjazzandbluesfest.com/

Hey Kath here,

Some of you may be aware that I have taken on a HUGE undertaking in organizing a jazz and blues festival here in Vernon, B.C. www.rarearthjazzandbluesfest.com. My partner Charles Lamarr, a legend himself, as one of the first black agents ever, where, over a span of 40 years he promoted such greats as Eartha Kitt, Richie Havens, Lena Horne, Jefferson Airplane, Van Morrison, Janis Joplin, the Doors and Ike and Tina Turner, then went onto manage the Chambers Brothers; his connections in the music industry are vast. Together, with my drive and musical business mind we make a great team and there is no doubt that this festival will be one of a kind. While we have a number of sponsors coming on board with us, we of course, are looking for more sponsors or people that love jazz and blues that have a few extra dollars that would help us put on an even better show. Bringing high-end acts into the Thompson Okanagan area is valuable, not just financially, but to bring these acts to our doorstep brings appreciation of the talent in our world, as well, we need to education our children with music - Canadians need to sing more!!! and as some of the best blues and jazz came from our elders - we need to honor them. My partner Charles and myself would be happy to meet with you to discuss the details of the event. Ask us about the 'Rare Earth Giving Foundation' . Call me [250] 938-2231

...Kamloops Music fans of all Genres now have a one stop website for most if not all of music that is happening. KamloopsMusic.com is a simple to navigate website with lots of up to date Live Music Listing.

...Kat Danser started off here amazing historical blues blog with the following entry.

"I'm Kat Danser and I'm getting ready to fulfill a dream I've had for years. Thanks to a fortunate tea break with Steve Williams last fall (2007) this dream was reactivated. I leave March 31, 2008, setting out for Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia and Louisiana. I will be learning about myself as a blues artist. How did a young girl from a poor family in Saskatchewan during the drought end up married the Blues?

My guides along the way will be Ma Rainey and Muddy Waters, two blues artists who provide endless inspiration. I will see where they lived: Muddy in Clarksdale, MS, and Ma in Columbus, GA. I will receive an education about the Classic Blues period and why I am so drawn to this time in musical history.

More than that, I will receive mentorship from Bill 'Howl'n Madd' Perry a blues historian and musician in Clarksdale, I will eat Bar-B-Que, watch the Mississippi flow, listen to and absorb the experience. At the end of it all I will have written my new album. Two glorious months to get back on track with my soul.

It means a lot to me that you will checkin with me from time to time, keeping tabs and letting me know that I'm not alone on this journey. Please view, respond and keep in touch!

Blessings,
Kat"

It is nearly a month since that first entry and I have eagerly pressed my bookmark to that blog each day and have been fascinated with Kat's amazing journey. Please take the opportunity to explore blues history with Kat via her frequently updated Blog. You will be very happy you did. http://katdanser.blogspot.com/

...Milestones in April

Blues Underground Network (The Blues Underground Network)

April 14th, 2008, Jeff Healey becomes the 75th Artist featured on the Blues Underground Network with the submission of "Mess Of Blues".

...New Additions To The Network

April was another great month for submissions with 6 New CD's and 5 New Artists added to the Network. The Blues Underground Network now Proudly Features 79 Artists.

Amos Garrett "Get Way Back - A Tribute To Percy Mayfield" (Stony Plain Records)

Amos Garrett has lately taken to underplaying his guitar prowess and concentrating on his singing, with his wonderful deep baritone often sounding most at home on classic songs from the nineteen thirties. With Percy Mayfield’s songs written this style and for the same voice range, this project is a perfect match. Often called ‘The Poet Laureate of the Blues’, Mayfield’s songs have been recorded by almost every major R&B artist, most notably Ray Charles, for whom Mayfield wrote some sixty songs. But I believe this is the first time that an artist has devoted an entire album to his work and it is a revelation. Read More

Jeff Healey "Mess Of Blues" (Stony Plain Records)

The very sad news of Jeff's passing came as we were putting the final artwork together for 'Mess Of Blues'. We decided to go ahead with the original release plans which have be in motion for the past several months and to honour Jeff's wish to release 'The Weight' to radio. It took us all by surprise when we heard the news. Jeff was an amazing artist and had such strength that we expected him to rebound as he had done in the past. Having worked with Jeff over the last few years we became friends and it was my honour to work with him on his Jeff Healey's Jazz Wizards releases and on his new release 'Mess Of Blues'. Duke Robillard "A Swingin Session With" (Stony Plain Records)

Duke Robillard’s latest CD, A Swingin' Session with Duke Robillard is due for release on May 13. His 14th album on the Stony Plain label features special guests Scott Hamilton, Bruce Katz, Doug James and Carl Querfurth. Tracks include a number of timeless jazz standards, as well as some great small group swing and blues tunes. The album focuses on the “swing” side of Duke’s playing, and includes classics like “Deed I Do,” “The Song Is Ended,” “Them That Got,” and “When Your Lover Has Gone.” Duke is currently nominated by the Blues Music Awards for Best Blues Guitarist, an award he has won 4 times previously. Duke will be touring extensively throughout 2008 with The Duke Robillard Band. http://www.rosebudus.com/robillard/  Read More

Sidestreet Reny "Not Seen The Light Of Day"

Once in a great long while, you happen upon an artist whose music is so honest and true that when you listen to it, you feel like you've come home. Sidestreet Reny is such a band of musicians and there is no risk of confusing them with anyone else on the music scene today. This trio almost defies category, and they have managed to forge their own sound and push musical boundaries in an era when many other musicians strive to sound the same. I first encountered Sidestreet Reny at www.youtube.com/sidestreetreny and it was love at first listen! Susan Scott Read More

Thelonius James Presents "The Sunland Chronicles"

T.J. Sullivan returns with another look at life entitled The Sunland Chronicles. These stories are a focused group of tunes of Joy & Desperation written through the eyes of Thelonius James. A year in the making, The Sunland Chronicles enlists the familiar rhythm section of the incredible Phil Bloch and Mark "Pocket" Goldberg. Phil Bloch lends his considerable talent as a Producer along with Engineer Extraordinaire and Co-Producer, Andrew Bush.

Some Heavyweight Talent was brought in to augment this Rootsy Group of Original Tunes. Terry Evans lends his amazing vocal talents along with Veteran Session men Matt Margucci, Jimmy Cox and Dr. Jay Stolmack. There's even a Guest Appearance by the King of Blues & Swing, Sunlands' own Johnny Williamson! All songs are penned by T.J. with the help of fellow writers, Pocket Goldberg & Oscar Jordan on Stuck in the Mud Blues and Chicken Pie respectively.

This CD also contains three Instrumentals which add much Color and Depth to the overall feel of the Sessions. If you enjoyed The Adventures of Thelonius James, you will be sure to Dig this CD from beginning to end! CD Baby

Danielle Braund "No Tears"

Take a jazz pianists soul, add a dash of blues at times, and mix in some stage musical style vocals, and you pretty much get Danielle Braund's approach to her new CD No Tears.

Raised in Alberta, Braund studied classical voice at university where she was urged by her music professors into opera. According to her website bio at the same time, she found composing her own music to be the added creative outlet that she needed. With her music degree in hand, she headed to Detroit where she further honed her jazz piano and improvisation skills.

So the gal has a rather strong background in music, and it shows. She sings big. This is music akin to the likes of a Diana Krall, different in pitch and material, there is a similarity of approach.

Braund wrote all the songs here, and they are fine efforts too an example being the title cut, and How Beautiful.
