With a sound reminiscent of Dylan and Knopfler, Guthrie Kennard brings his unique style of Americana, Blues, and Texas Country to the forefront, with his new groundbreaking release, "Matchbox". Guthrie Kennard has been plying his musical craft for over 40 years and has played with many greats including the Legendary Ray Wylie Hubbard, whom not only played on this Album, but also produced it. Having this musical background, Guthrie Kennard takes "Matchbox" beyond being just Lyrically Rich and into the realm of musical completeness that is a rare joy to behold. "Matchbox" consists of 10 tracks and through them all, Guthrie shows us that we yet again have another songwriter whom is more than willing and able to connect with his audience, portraying the world around him in words we are all familiar with and in a style and form we can all truly appreciate. Which such a strong musical consistency to this Album, it would be hard for anyone to choose a couple of favorites, but I will give it my best shot by picking, "Another Day, Another Dollar", and "Cross That Line" with all the rest following very closely behind. "Matchbox" really is Americana, Blues, and Texas Country done at it's very best. A 5***** Rating for sure for this very enjoyable release which I highly recommend to all fans of great music. 1. Cross That Line 3:18 Listen To Samples Here About Guthrie Kennard By the age of 14 Guthrie was playing with friend and fellow musician Joe Russell in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia. He left home to travel to Atlanta, Georgia, where Joe was signed with Bill Lowery Agency whose roster included artists such as Billy Joe Royal, Classics IV and Joe South. In Atlanta, Guthrie met people who were successful doing what they loved to do; his path was chosen. Back in Richmond, Guthrie formed the band Studio B and had his first opportunity to get serious and grow musically. Southside Johnny (of the Asbury Jukes) later moved down from New Jersey and became the bands lead singer.
Guthrie originally came west in 1968,
moving there to stay in 1971. During this time he started playing with
Smokin’ Joe Kubek. Along with many other Texas artists. After a career of collaboration with some great musicians, Guthrie finally broke out on his own as a singer / songwriter to tell his own story on his first CD “Ranch Road 12” produced by legendary Texas troubadour Ray Wylie Hubbard. Now with his newest projects “Unmade Beds” released October 2009 and “Matchbox” which Ray Wylie Hubbard also produced and performed on along with Guthrie to be released in early 2010. With a voice that recalls Bob Dylan and
Keith Richards, Kennard spins his tales of rural disaffection against a
backdrop of rough-hewed melodies and backwoods percussion, classic Texas
music, a soundtrack to the Hill Country, and the slow country songs sound
like a drive on patchy, paved roads that lead to all sorts of interesting
places.
Guthrie Kennard is one bad ass song
writer and this is no mediocre compliment. This man can write a song that
is as true as an angel on the witness stand. His songs are intense and
none on this album are run of the mill. His gravely vocal performances
deliver the songs with such realness that it is hard not to hang on every
word. This album is forceful and has a realness very few recordings ever
achieve. A winning project
His songs are dead-to-right eloquent,
