Becki Sue & Her Big Rockin' Daddies "Big Rockin' Boogie"

Reviews and Info

WARNING: Listening to Big Rockin' Boogie while driving may result in speeding tickets! These guys are GREAT! Becki Sue reminds me of Angela Strehli and Susan Tedeschi (sorry if I got the spelling wrong). The Harpoon player, Jim King, is among the best I've ever heard and Tom Boyle lays down some mighty fine licks on guitar.

About Becki Sue & Her Big Rockin' Daddies

Becki Sue & Her Big Rockin' Daddies are one of the most popular bands, blues or otherwise, in the Pacific Northwest. Becki Sue & Her Big Rockin' Daddies strength lies in its original blues songs and choice of obscure blues covers that meld together into a Texas meets Chicago meets Pacific Northwest blues stew. The WBS has honored the band with 39 'BB' Award nominations since 2005. Becki Sue & Her Big Rockin' Daddies has won 13 of those awards, including 'Best Blues Band' in 2006 and 2007 and 'Best Blues Recording' of 2008 for their 2nd CD release, Big City Blues. Becki Sue & Her Big Rockin' Daddies has been nominated twice for 'Muddy' Awards by Oregon's Cascade Blues Association in the 'Best Regional Band' category in 2007 and 2008, winning the award in 2008. Viewers of Seattle's King 5 TV (NBC) voted the band 'The Best Band in Western Washington' in 2008, out of 279 nominated bands of all musical styles! They placed 2nd in 2009 out of over 400 bands for that same award. The Inland Empire Blues Society named Big City Blues as the 'Best Blues Recording' of 2007.

Tom Boyle

Also known as "T-Boy Neal", Tom's perfectionism and constant striving for that perfect tone have earned him the reputation of being a consummate bluesman. Fans and critics alike are singing the praises of this native Washington State blues guitarist.

Tom began his career in Olympia, Washington in 1981 as bandleader for the Capital City’s legendary blues band "The Harmonic Tremors". In 1982 he moved to Seattle and immersed himself in the thriving Pioneer Square blues scene. From 1982 to 1996, Tom joined forces with some of the region’s top blues acts and musicians, performing and recording with John Hodgkin in "The Slackmasters" and "Drivin' Wheel"; with Mike Lynch in "Nitelife"; with Portland-based keyboardist, D.K.. Stewart; with Doug Lynn in "The Led Jaxson Band"; as co-leader, along with Perry Sanders, of Olympia's "The Steamers"; and as leader of "The T-Boy Neal Band". Tom has opened shows for John Lee Hooker, The Legendary Blues Band, Roy Buchanan and James Harman, among others. He has shared the stage with Mark DuFresne, Curtis Salgado, Jimmy McCracklin, Larry Davis, Cash McCall, Sugar Ray Norcia, and blues guitar great Ronnie Earl. While living in Boston in 1978-‘79, Tom took private blues guitar lessons from Ronnie, who taught him "practically everything I know about blues guitar". Tom is a multiple Washington Blues Society "BB Award" nominee for "Best Electric Guitar" ...and the winner of that award in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007. He was also nominated for the WBS "Hall of Fame" and "Life Time Achievement" awards in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Jim King

Jim co-fronts the band with Becki Sue. A top notch entertainer with a rich, pure voice, he tears into the harp and tenor sax with equal fervor. His stage presence, sense of humor, and ability to connect with an audience help make Becki Sue & her Big Rockin' Daddies! the premier showcase Pacific Northwest blues band.

Jim has been entertaining audiences in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years. Known for his honkin’ tenor sax and ferocious blues harp playing, he is the former band leader of the BB Award winning "The Nightsticks", former member of regional favorites, "Junkyard Jane”, and often, the featured soloist for "The Two Scoops Combo”. Jim displays an exciting stage presence and possesses a sharp, quick wit, honed from over ten years as the lead singer and front man for the ‘fabulous’ "Royals", who reigned supreme from the early days of Pioneer Square’s live music scene thru the early ‘90’s. He would play the part of Elwood Blues when the band performed their popular Blues Brothers tribute. Drawing from deep roots in a wide variety of styles, including country, swing, rock ‘n roll and, of course, the blues, Jim is a driving force behind the musical and visual aspects of "Becki Sue & her Big Rockin’ Daddies!". Jim has received several BB Award nominations for "Best Harmonica” and "Best Horn” by The Washington Blues Society most recently being nominated for "Performer of the Year" in 2006 and winning the 2006 "Best Horn" award.

Becki Sue

Blues fans from all around The Pacific Northwest are taking advantage of opportunities to hear this hot blues belter sing. Becki Sue started out singing in karaoke bars, and was guided to blues material by Tom. She's sexy and sassy, and her performances will leave you begging for more.

A native of Tumwater, Washington, Becki Sue burst on to the local blues scene in 2002 like a Texas tornado. She is described as a big voiced blues singer reminiscent of the great Texas vocalists, Lou Ann Barton and Angela Strehli. After turning heads at the local blues jams , gigging with "The Tim Sherman Band", and teaming with Tom Boyle in "The T-Boy Neal Band", Becki Sue is truly coming into her own as a voice to be reckoned with for years to come. Whether delivering a Texas-style hard shuffle or a 'down and dirty' Chicago-style slow blues, Becki Sue’s energetic stage presence and in-your-face' delivery can’t help but command attention. Becki Sue was nominated for "BB" Awards by The Washington Blues Society in the "Best Female Vocalist" and "Performer of the Year" categories in 2006, 2007 and 2008, winning both awards in 2007.

Jeff Hayes

You could whack this guy in the head with a two by four, and you wouldn't knock him off the beat. Jeff is as solid as they come, and regarded as one of the finest blues drummers anywhere. He anchors the rhythm section of Becki Sue & her Big Rockin' Daddies! and keeps the groove nailed down tight.

Ranging from the very low-down Delta side of the blues, up tempo swings and shuffles, as well as Ne w Orleans style grooves, Jeff can cover it all with skill and precision. Jeff has played at all of the major blues/roots music venues in the the Pacific NW, as well as venues in western Canada, the Mississippi Delta, Arkansas, Beale St. in Memphis, & Austin, Texas. Jeff has studied with premier New Orleans drummer Johnny Vidacovich, Steve Smith at The Seattle Drum School of Music, Kevin O'Day in New Orleans, Dave Jette at Donn Bennett's School of Music in Bellevue, and most recently with Portland's Jimi Bott of Fabulous Thunderbirds and Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers fame. Jeff's lyrics have been described by Canadian blues writer, D.D. Rocker, as "extremely catchy and humorous". Tony Englehart describes Jeff’s drumming as "tasty” and his lyrics "witty". In 2004, Jeff had the opportunity to share drumming credits with legendary blues drummer, Sam Carr, on recordings by The U.K.9 9s "Son’s of the Delta” which also features the great Pinetop Perkins on piano. Jeff has recently completed a demo recording that features his fine vocal ability well as his drumming. The resulting CD is receiving airplay not only locally, but in Clarksdale, Mississippi as well. Contact Jeff at drummerboy1961@aol.com or telephone 206-909-6366. Jeff has been nominated by the Washington Blues Society for "Best Drums" in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007, while winning that award in 2008. Hailing from Wichita, Kansas, Les has been a mainstay on the Pacific Northwest's regional blues scene for over two decades. He is one of only a handful of "true blues” upright bass players around. A true musician's musician, Les lays down a rich sounding solid blues groove while delighting the audience with his showmanship…a complete artist in every sense of the word. He is also an original member, along with Jim King, of the long running jump swing band "The Nightsticks”. Les has been honored by the Washington Blues Society as winner of the BB Award for "Best Bass”, in 1996, 2006 and 2007.

...what they're sayin'...

"Hey Y'all- great to meet you at Rendezvous Blues Festival. Y'all sounded awesome and a very tough act to follow. Keep on doin' it!"
-Rockin' Jake of the Rockin' Jake Band, New Orleans, LA

"Overall, I found "Big City Blues" a very enjoyable album ...very tasteful playing and an obvious love for the (blues) tradition in a lot of different styles. This is a band that I’d enjoy a lot live and could heartily recommend to any blues fan".
-Bruce Iglauer, founder of Alligator Records, Chicago, Illinois.

"Your performance that night (at the 2007 International Blues Challenge) was most memorable. Teddy Lee Hooker was a great entertainer and your band knew if they had any chance they had to rise to the occasion and put on a 'performance'. And indeed you did. I remember Becki Sue on stage saying that your band 'had never given a performance like that before'... which is what you needed to do. After Teddy Lee got finished I was certain he was going to be my favorite. I didn't think it possible for anybody else to out perform him. Yet, you guys did it. You got 1 point more from me than Teddy Lee did."
-Nancy Edwards, Marketing Director for The Blues Festival Guide and one of our IBC judges at the Hard Rock Cafe on Beale Street in Memphis, TN.

"Out of all the bands that I saw at the 2007 International Blues Challenge (IBC), Becki Sue & Her Rockin' Daddies was the band that I enjoyed the most, I would have to say. I'd go see them anytime that I would get that chance. What a dynamite show! Very entertaining and the whole band is a smokin' outfit. T-Boy is one bad boy on the guitar. He has an original approach to a traditional sound - gotta love it! Lotta fire, also ... gotta love that, too!"
-Don "T-Bone" Erickson - founding editor, BluesWax - the Online Voice of the Blues, IBC Judge.

"As the '06 Washington Blues Society "BB" Award winner for Best Band, these hugely talented musicians will set the mood with their high energy performance that has made them one of the Northwest's most sought after blues bands."
-Phil Chesnut, award-winning blues artist, writer and Snoqualmie Blues Festival promoter.

"Tight, skilled and full of energy, Becki Sue & Her Big Rockin' Daddies! are not just playing at the bar or festival you happen to be at ... they're the reason you're there!"
-Steve Harris, Flying Spot Entertainment.

"I saw Becki Sue & her Big Rockin' Daddies! for the first time up at the Sunbanks Blues Festival this spring (2004). They own the 'what the ? award' for being the crowd's favorite new band."
-Eric Holm, writer for the Walla Walla Blues Society.

"Since Duffy Bishop cut down on her gigs back in the early 90's, there hasn't been anyone worthy to take her coveted throne, until now. New kids on the northwest blues block, Becki Sue & her Big Rockin' Daddies! plays in a high energy, boogie woogie style that dares you to keep seated."
-Tony Engelhart, writer for The Weekly Volcano.
