The unique sound of the steel guitar in a non-country format is what sets this band apart from other bands. This is not your typical steel guitar sound. Far from it. Think Duane Allman or Elmore James with as solid a rhythm section as you will find. Playing classic rock, blues/rock and southern rock by artists like George Thorogood, Z.Z. Top and original classic blues/rock, "61 South" is sure to roll away your blues. The Barney Adams Band has it's roots in the Oshawa area, playing local clubs in Whitby Oshawa, Courtice and Bowmanville. Big Jim's best instrument is his rich baritone voice, which lends him an attention-grabbing authority. His skill at storytelling, emotional singing and the honest musicianship of his acoustic guitar with that right hand thumping the bass while strumming never fails to captivate his audience. Born in Widener, Arkansas in 1939, Luther Allison (the 14th of 15 musically gifted children) first connected to the blues at age ten, when he began playing the diddley bow (a wire attached by nails to a wall with rocks for bridges and a bottle to fret the wire). His family migrated to Chicago in 1951, and Luther began soaking in the sounds of Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Robert Nighthawk. Singer/pianist Marcia Ball knows how to raise roofs and tear down walls with her infectious, intelligent and deeply emotional brand of southern boogie, rollicking, roadhouse blues and heartfelt ballads. Over the course of her three-decade career, Ball has earned a huge and intensely loyal following all over the world. Her exquisite piano playing and passionate, playful vocals fuse New Orleans and Gulf Coast R&B with Austin's deep songwriting tradition into a sound No Depression described as "a little rock, a lot of roll, a pinch of rhythm and a handful of blues." One might say that the Mississippi River runs through his veins. Certainly the spirit of traditional blues is the lifeblood of 21 year-old Slick Ballinger. Influenced by the likes of Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters, the North Carolina native and current Mississippi resident picked up the guitar at the age of fifteen and with it took the torch from a bygone generation and began to run with it. Terry “Harmonica” Bean has decades of experience with the blues. A lifelong resident of Pontotoc, Mississippi, Terry first heard downhome blues at his childhood home. His father, Eddie Bean, sang and played blues guitar and prior to Terry’s birth traveled with an electric blues band. Beck grew up in Wallington, England. His mother’s piano playing and the family’s radio tuned to everything from dance to classical made sure Beck was surrounded by music from a young age. Bell started playing guitar at the age of six, and in his teens he polished his skills playing with the legends of Chicago blues scene including Eddy Clearwater, Big Walter Horton and Eddie Taylor. The Keith Bennett band has performed regularly at the Yale Hotel in Vancouver for the past six years. The Yale Hotel, one of Canada's premier blues clubs, boasts live music seven nights a week and has hosted an astonishing array of world class musicians over the years. When rumors of the closing of this prominent musical attraction began to surface recently, it seemed only natural to me to retain an audio snapshot of my time there. This recording, JUMPIN AT THE YALE, is what we sounded like on any given night. I have been honoured to have had the opportunity to work with such great talent both on the stage and behind the scenes on this project. My warmest thanks to all those involved. — Keith Bennett With all the makings of an American music icon, Tab Benoit has become one of the premiere roots stylist of the century. Tab has paid his dues as a road troubadour playing 250 nights a year performing at venues across North America, honing his guitar chops and becoming part of Louisiana folklore and legend. Salil V. Bhatt represents the tenth generation of the famous Bhatt lineage, where music has been flowing for more than five
hundred years. Salil is the son of the legendary slide player and India's GRAMMY AWARD winner Padmashree Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Eric was born In New York into a musical family. Eric's father, Leon Bibb, is a trained singer who sang in musical theatre and made a name for himself as part of the 1960's New York folk scene. His uncle was the world famous jazz pianist and composer John Lewis, of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Family friends included Pete Seeger, Odetta and actor/singer/activist Paul Robeson, Eric's godfather. Growing up in the 1940s on a farm in Iowa with a loving but non musical family, Elvin seldom heard music as a kid. "This was before TV," Elvin says, "and on the radio you got a lot of Frank Sinatra and ‘How Much Is That Doggie In the Window' type of stuff." The family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, when Elvin was 10, in 1952. Tulsa was "totally segregated," says Elvin, "I mean, hard core." However, "the one thing they couldn't segregate was the airwaves. When rock and roll started up in the mid-'50s, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Little Richard showed up on white radio." If you are looking for a band that can rock, this is it! Andre and the J-Tones: Rhythm and Blues Experience! Few blues artists go back and preserve the source of the music, tied with the minute splashes of modern themes. Big Al Blake is a rare bird in that club. As a child in Oklahoma, he heard and fell in love with blues from the radio. Moving to California in the mid-60's, he hung out at the Ash Grove, meeting Junior Wells, Freddie King, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Sunnyland Slim. Toronto, Canada native Terry Blersh began singing and playing guitar at a young age. Terry’s first influences were early rock ‘n roll, Elvis, Sam Cooke, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Band, Stax, Motown, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and local guitar legends, Dominic Troiano and Freddy Keeler. It wasn’t long before he became aware of the music and artists that had influenced his heroes. That led to a musical journey back to where it all came from, blues and jazz, and the music of Albert King, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles and Nat King Cole. Since the successful release of its first studio album, “Slide”, in June, 2006, and the band’s second studio album, ”Staring at the Sun”, Blackdog Blue has seen radio play across Canada and in Europe; all the while establishing a strong, dedicated, local following. We’ve always listened to a lot of Delta Blues: Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson…but unfortunately it was always our private passion, we always played with people who picked up blues after Muddy Waters. Or rather, in many cases, after The Blues Brothers. "...what might surely be one of the highest notes of her brilliant career... immense knowledge and expertise of the Acoustic Guitar... a voice that can rival any of her peers... You will truly not see it done much better than the way Rory Block plays it." JOHN VERMILYEA Blues Underground Network We are a 4 piece blues/rock band based out of the greater Chicagoland area. Only one word is needed to describe The Blue Monday Band and that word is UNIQUE. Comprised of three seasoned professional musicians - founder and leader Diann Gaudreau (bass and lead vocal), Mike Evans (drums and backing vocal) and Paul D. Cole (Lead guitar), this classic rock power trios stage presence and showmanship is only equaled by their individual instrumental virtuosity. Bluessmyth is a rock/blues/soul band whose rhythmic foundation is laid down by bassist Jason Yaholkoski's deep, definitive bass playing complimented with Celene Yohemas' soulful, hammerhead drumming, and Chris Yaholkoski's fire and brimstone guitar lines and blues soaked vocals. A true power trio, they play with a power, passion and commitment that captures the true nature of their chosen music. With a powerful mixture of original and classic material, the Band delivers with the commitment and professionalism that has been earned from many years touring the Blues, R&B and Rock circuits. From old classics to new original compositions Blues Tribe draws inspiration from Chicago Blues to West Coast Swing, R & B, Funk and even a touch of Country. The band then adds it's own flair to each song, making it their own. Signature tight harmonies, great instrumentation, and clever original tunes are the trademarks of The Blue Voodoo. As Joe Bonamassa grows his reputation as one of the world’s greatest guitar players, he is also evolving into a charismatic blues-rock star and singer-songwriter of stylistic depth and emotional resonance. The Bottoms Up Blues Gang is a St. Louis Acoustic Blues Duo featuring vocalist Kari Liston and guitarist Jeremy Segel-Moss. The BUBG play a unique blend of originals and covers in the styles of Delta Blues, R & B, Soul, Jazz, and Blues influenced Rock & Roll. Billy Branch has followed a very non-traditional path to the blues. Unlike many blues artists, he isn't from the South. Billy was born in Chicago in 1951 and was raised in Los Angeles. He first picked up a harmonica at the age of ten and immediately began to play simple tunes. Norine Braun considers herself a late bloomer, like many writers of our era, time and experience cultivate much of what we have to say, to write, to sing. I simply say the time was right to take the songs written in the bedroom and move to the next phase. There are no rules. Danielle Braund is a powerful vocalist crafting emotional and involving compositions. She brings the after-hours vibe of John Mayer to her urban melodies and a big voice reminiscent of Annie Lennox. Dubbed 'Little Boogaloo' by her mentor and duo partner, the late Boogaloo Ames (1918-2002), this Mississippi Delta native holds a bachelor's degree in music but credits Ames's down-home tutelage with teaching her how to 'really play.' Danny Brooks was told by his father when the 15-year-old singer decided on a career in Rock n' Roll. Bill Middlebrook (son Danny reinvented himself in the 1980s by shortening his name) knew very little about the music business. But he had lived on a low road in his early years and had seen plenty around Toronto's boogie dives in the 1940s and`50s. Harpdog Brown and the Bloodhounds There's never been any question in my mind; Harpdog Brown is absolutely the 'genuine item, the real thing'. I'll say the same thing Eric Burdon once said to me, "We're wild dogs from the same pack!" Tom Lavin, singer, guitarist, band leader, Powder Blues It's like Bob Seger meeting Jonny Lang in a juke joint to talk about Eric Clapton. A father and son blues rock band mixing together the old and the new to create electric contemporary blues. “The new voice and sound of the old blues.” John Vermilyea, Blues Underground Network R.L. "Rural" Burnside was born on November 21, 1926 in Oxford, Mississippi. He died on September 1, 2005. Like Fred McDowell, he was from the northern Mississippi hill country, rather than the actual delta. Having toured the USA and Canada since the late 50s Steve still performs with the finesse and excitement that only a seasoned performer can. His recordings go from the 50s vinyl 78s to current CDs and MP3s and his guest list of performers is top shelf. An eight-time W.C. Handy “Best Blues Instrumentalist - Piano” award nominee, Henry Butler knows no limitations. Although blinded by glaucoma since birth, Butler is also a world class photographer with his work displayed at exhibitions throughout the United States. Playing piano since the age of six, Butler is a master of musical diversity. Combining the percussive jazz piano playing of McCoy Tyner and the New Orleans style playing of Professor Longhair through his classically trained wizardry, Butler continues to craft a sound uniquely his own. A rich amalgam of jazz, Caribbean, classical, pop, blues and R&B influences, his music is as excitingly eclectic as that of his New Orleans birthplace. John
